Day 17: a moment that makes you mad

Don’t get me wrong; I still think the mermaids in the lagoon are very beautiful…but in my eyes, they become quite ugly when they start splashing Wendy like that. The funny thing is, though, that I used to find this scene hilarious. And I know that Peter laughing at the whole thing is kind of a nod to his immaturity, but still, I can’t help but get really annoyed at that.

“The character design of Flynn came from the process which was called the “hot man meeting” by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, during which they set up a meeting with all of the female employees of the studio in one room and asked them for their opinions of what made a man good looking in order to create Flynn’s character design with features such as eye color, hair color and style and body type. Video footage showed concept art and photos of various male celebrities, including Johnny Depp, Hugh Jackman, Brad Pitt, David Beckham and Gene Kelly on the walls of the room. Director Byron Howard said they wanted to make Flynn “the most handsome, most attractive male lead Disney has ever had.”

“The hot man meeting” is now my second favorite animation design story, after the one about how Pixar animators working on the Dug team for Up had “fat dog day” where they basically went to a shelter and were like “please bring out your fattest dogs,” and then they hung out with the fattest jolliest available dogs, all day.

I’m not sure if the “hot man meeting” is true, since some of Flynn’s concept art has him as a bigger character, like the twins.  I thought Disney went with the slimmer design in the end because it was believed to be more attractive.

That is true Grimmy, I believe it was Glen Keane who wanted Flynn to be like a gentle giant type (awesome concept art). But then John Lasseter insisted on Flynn being a conventionally handsome guy, which led to the “hot man meeting”, if I’m not mistaken.

(I wanted Flynn to stay big and burly, grumblegrumble. But hot Flynn is good too.)

another one of those disney princess coloring page thingies (like the one i did a few years ago). this is the coloring page i used and this is the inspiration for the palette/style. just a fun exercise! drew it with a normal tablet (as opposed to a cintiq) which was weird.
